🔄 Try this first — Unplug the power adapter from the wall, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait 60 seconds for the device to restart fully.

If your Echo Pop is showing this problem, working through the checks below in order will resolve it in the large majority of cases. Each step is safe to carry out yourself and is verified against Ring’s official support guidance.

What This Problem Means

A red light ring on an Echo device means the microphone has been muted. This is a deliberate privacy feature, not a fault. When muted, Alexa cannot hear the wake word.

Common Symptoms

  • Solid red light ring glowing on the device
  • Alexa does not respond to the wake word
  • No blue light flash when speaking
  • Device appears powered on but is not listening

Safe Checks You Can Try

1. Unmute the microphone

Press the microphone button on top of the device. On most Echo devices this is a button with a microphone icon or a line through it. The light ring will turn blue when the microphone is active again.

2. Confirm the correct button

On the Echo Dot, Echo and Echo Pop the mute button is on the top surface. On the Echo Show it is a physical switch on the back or side. On the Echo Studio it is on the top ring. Press it once to toggle the microphone back on.

3. Restart the device

If the red light persists after pressing the mute button, unplug the power adapter for 30 seconds, plug back in and allow 60 seconds to restart. Then check the light ring colour.

4. Check the Alexa app

Open the Alexa app, go to Devices and select your Echo device. Confirm it is shown as online. If the device is offline, check your Wi-Fi connection.
