If your Echo Dot Max is showing this problem, working through the checks below in order will resolve it in the large majority of cases. Each step is safe to carry out yourself and is verified against Amazon’s official support guidance.
What This Problem Means
When smart home controls stop working through Alexa, it is almost always a skill configuration, device discovery or network issue rather than a fault with the Echo device itself.
Common Symptoms
- Alexa says the device is not responding
- Alexa says she cannot find the device
- Smart home devices controlled by voice previously but no longer responding
- Alexa app shows devices as offline or unavailable
- Commands are understood but nothing happens
Safe Checks You Can Try
1. Re-discover smart home devices
Say “Alexa, discover devices” or open the Alexa app, go to Devices and tap the ‘+’ icon then “Add Device”. This prompts Alexa to scan for newly added or reconnected smart home devices.
2. Check the smart home skill is enabled
Open the Alexa app, go to Skills & Games and search for the skill for your smart home brand (Ring, Philips Hue, LIFX etc.). Confirm the skill is enabled and that your account is linked. If it was recently disabled or the password changed, re-enable and re-link it.
3. Restart the smart home device and its hub
Power off the smart home device and any associated hub or bridge, wait 30 seconds, and power back on. Then ask Alexa to discover devices again.
4. Check the smart home device’s Wi-Fi connection
The smart home device needs to be connected to Wi-Fi independently of Alexa. Open the relevant manufacturer’s app and confirm the device is shown as online there. If it is offline in the manufacturer’s app, fix that connection first.
5. Remove and re-add the device in the Alexa app
In the Alexa app, go to Devices, find the device that is not responding and delete it. Then add it again via the ‘+’ icon. This refreshes the connection between Alexa and the device.
