🔄 Try this first — Press and hold the orange setup button on the back of the doorbell for 10 seconds, then release. Wait 60 seconds for it to restart fully. Restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds too.

If your Ring Video Doorbell 3 is showing this problem, working through the checks below in order will resolve it in the large majority of cases. Each step is safe to carry out yourself and is verified against Ring’s official support guidance.

What This Problem Means

The doorbell button sends a signal through the Ring app and, if configured, to a Ring Chime or your existing internal chime. If power, Wi-Fi, app settings or chime wiring are disrupted, the button appears not to work even though the mechanism itself may be fine.

Common Symptoms

  • Pressing the button produces no notification in the Ring app
  • No chime sound when the button is pressed
  • Button feels stuck, stiff or does not click properly
  • App shows the doorbell as online but registers no button presses
  • Visitor alerts arrive late or not at all

Safe Checks You Can Try

1. Check the battery level

Open Device Health and check the battery level. Below 20% the button can become unresponsive. Remove the battery, charge via USB-C until the indicator glows solid green, then reinsert and test the button again.

2. Restart the doorbell and router

Remove and reinsert the battery to restart the doorbell. Restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds. A weak Wi-Fi signal can prevent button presses from registering even when the doorbell appears online. Check RSSI in Device Health — below −60 dBm needs attention.

3. Check notification settings

In the Ring app, confirm Doorbell Alerts are switched on under Device Settings. Check your phone’s system settings and confirm notifications are allowed for the Ring app. Do Not Disturb or Focus mode will silence alerts.

4. Check chime settings

In Device Settings, go to Chime Settings. If you use a Ring Chime, confirm it is linked to the doorbell and powered on. If you use an existing internal chime, confirm In-Home Doorbell is enabled and the transformer provides at least 8–24 VAC.

5. Remove protective film and check the button physically

New Ring doorbells ship with a protective film over the button. Peel it away completely if present. Press the button firmly and listen for a clean click — a stuck or mushy button may need replacing.
