Is your Ring Video Doorbell recording footage that appears blurry, pixelated or below the expected 1080p HD quality? Here are the checks you can safely carry out before contacting support.
What This Problem Means
The camera’s 1080p HD video is not displaying at expected quality — most commonly caused by insufficient Wi-Fi bandwidth at the doorbell’s location or a dirty lens.
Common Symptoms
- Footage appears grainy, pixelated or heavily compressed
- Faces and fine detail are unclear
- Video quality drops noticeably at night
- Video has a pink, purple or blue tint
Safe Checks You Can Try
1. Check Wi-Fi Signal Strength
Open Device Health in the Ring app and check signal strength. Ring recommends a minimum upload speed of 2Mbps for your Ring Video Doorbell. If signal is weak, the camera automatically reduces resolution. A Ring Chime Pro positioned closer to the front door can improve signal.
2. Clean the Camera Lens
Inspect the lens for dust, smudges, rain marks, spiderwebs or insects. Use a soft dry lint-free cloth to gently clean the lens surface. Outdoor lenses accumulate grime that significantly reduces apparent video quality.
3. Check the Video Quality Setting
In the Ring app go to Device Settings → Video Settings. Confirm the video quality is not set to a lower tier to conserve bandwidth or battery. Increasing video quality may require a stronger Wi-Fi connection.
4. Address a Pink or Purple Tint
A colour tint in the video indicates a night vision switching issue. In the Ring app go to Device Settings → Video Settings and check the night vision setting. Restart the doorbell to reset the camera state.
5. Restart the Doorbell
Remove the built-in rechargeable battery from the doorbell, wait 10 seconds, then reinsert it. Allow two minutes to restart. A firmware reboot resolves most temporary video quality issues.
