Overview
The Echo Pop is Amazon’s most affordable Echo — smaller than the Dot, cheaper than the Dot and designed to slot into a corner of a room without taking up much space. It has a half-sphere design and a front-facing speaker, which gives it a slightly different sound profile to the globe-shaped Dot.
It does everything you’d expect from an Alexa device — smart home control, music playback, questions and answers, timers, alarms — just in the smallest, cheapest package Amazon offers.
Key Features
- Alexa built-in — full voice control
- Compact half-sphere design
- Front-facing 1.95-inch speaker
- Controls smart home devices — Ring, Nest, Philips Hue and more
- Hands-free calls to phones and other Echo devices
- Works as an intercom between Echo devices
- Dual-band Wi-Fi
- Available in multiple colours
Setup & Compatibility
Plug in, open the Alexa app, two-minute setup. Works on dual-band Wi-Fi. Compatible with the full range of Alexa smart home integrations. No Zigbee hub built in.
Pros
- Cheapest Echo available
- Very compact — fits anywhere
- Full Alexa functionality despite the lower price
- Good for bedrooms, kids’ rooms or secondary rooms
- Available in fun colours
Cons
- Sound quality is the most limited in the Echo range
- No Zigbee hub
- No temperature sensor (unlike the 5th gen Dot)
- Front-facing speaker sounds less even than omnidirectional Echos
- Not ideal as a primary music speaker
Common Problems & Fixes
The same issues that affect all Echo devices apply — Wi-Fi dropouts, Alexa mishearing, smart home commands needing re-discovery. For most faults a quick restart resolves things.
The front-facing speaker means it sounds better when you’re sitting in front of it than when you’re across the room — worth considering where you position it. For a full list of known faults and fixes see our troubleshooting guide.
Real World Performance
For what it costs, it punches its weight. Alexa responds quickly, smart home control works the same as on any Echo and it handles music and radio playback well enough for background listening.
You notice the sound limitations when you push the volume, but for low-to-medium levels in a small room it’s perfectly fine.
Best Alternatives
- Echo Dot (5th Gen) — Worth a few pounds more for better sound, temperature sensor and omnidirectional audio
- Echo (4th Gen) — If sound quality matters more than price
Who Should Buy It?
Best suited to bedrooms, children’s rooms, offices or any secondary room where you want Alexa but don’t want to spend much. Also a good gift for someone new to smart speakers.
Verdict
The Echo Pop does what Amazon promises at the price it charges. It’s not the best-sounding Echo and it doesn’t have the extra features of the Dot, but for pure Alexa functionality in the smallest possible package it works well. If the Dot is in budget, the Dot is worth it — but if you want something even cheaper or smaller, the Pop is a perfectly decent choice.
