🔄 Try this first — Press and hold the orange setup button on the back of the doorbell for 10 seconds, then release. Wait 60 seconds for it to restart fully. Restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds too.

If your Ring Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen) is showing this problem, working through the checks below in order will resolve it in the large majority of cases. Each step is safe to carry out yourself and is verified against Ring’s official support guidance.

What This Problem Means

The device cannot establish or maintain a Wi-Fi connection. This prevents live view, motion alerts and remote access from working. It is almost always caused by signal strength, network configuration or a recent change to your router or broadband.

Common Symptoms

  • Device shows offline or cannot be found in the Ring app
  • Setup fails at the Wi-Fi connection step
  • Device connects briefly then drops off again
  • RSSI value shown as red or amber in Device Health
  • Spinning blue light on the device during setup that does not complete

Safe Checks You Can Try

1. Restart the device and router

Remove and reinsert the battery to restart the doorbell, and restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds. Wait 2 minutes before attempting to reconnect in the Ring app.

2. Check Wi-Fi signal strength (RSSI)

In Device Health, check the RSSI value. Below −60 dBm will cause connection problems. Improve signal by moving your router closer or adding a Ring Chime Pro between the router and the doorbell.

3. Confirm 2.4GHz Wi-Fi is available

Ring battery doorbells connect on 2.4GHz only. If your router broadcasts 2.4GHz and 5GHz under the same network name, the doorbell may try to connect to 5GHz and fail. Separate the bands in your router settings and reconnect the doorbell to the 2.4GHz network specifically.

4. Re-enter Wi-Fi credentials

If your Wi-Fi password has changed recently, the doorbell will not be able to reconnect automatically. Open the Ring app, go to Device Settings and select Change Wi-Fi Network to re-enter the correct credentials.

5. Check router security settings

Some routers block new devices by default. Check your router’s MAC address filtering and device isolation settings. Ensure WPA2 or WPA3 security is used — Ring devices do not support some older security protocols.
