🔄 Try this first — Remove the Quick Release Ultra Battery Pack from the base of the camera, wait 10 seconds, then reinsert until it clicks. Also restart your router by unplugging for 30 seconds.

Is the night vision on your Ring Spotlight Cam (2nd Gen) failing to activate or producing very dark footage after dark? Here are the checks you can safely carry out before contacting support.

What This Problem Means

The infrared night vision is not engaging correctly, resulting in dark or unusable footage at night — most commonly caused by a lens obstruction, a strong nearby light source or a low battery.

Common Symptoms

  • Footage is very dark or completely black at night
  • Night vision appears much dimmer than expected compared to other cameras
  • Camera does not switch into night mode as it gets dark
  • IR lights are not visible when the camera is active after dark

Safe Checks You Can Try

1. Clean the Camera Lens

A dirty lens is the most common cause of poor night vision. Use a dry microfibre cloth to gently clean the lens. Even a light film of dust or moisture significantly reduces the effectiveness of infrared night vision.

2. Check for Strong Nearby Light Sources

Bright external lights pointed toward the camera — such as street lights, security lights from neighbouring properties or reflective surfaces — can prevent the camera from switching into night vision mode. Adjust the camera angle or reduce nearby light sources.

3. Check Battery Level

Low battery levels reduce night vision performance to conserve power. Check the battery percentage in Device Health. If below 20%, charge the battery pack before testing night vision again.

4. Check Night Vision Setting in Ring App

Open the Ring app, go to Device Settings and check that Night Vision is enabled. On some firmware versions this can be toggled off accidentally.

5. Restart the Camera

Remove the Quick Release Ultra Battery Pack for 10 seconds, reinsert it and test night vision again after the camera has fully restarted. A firmware reboot resolves most temporary sensor issues.
