Is Eufy Safe? The Privacy History Explained

Eufy markets its cameras on privacy and local, subscription-free storage, but it’s worth knowing the background. In November 2022 a security researcher found that some eufy cameras uploaded thumbnail images to the cloud even when cloud features were switched off, and that camera streams could in some cases be viewed without authentication by anyone with the right link. In January 2023, eufy’s parent company Anker acknowledged to The Verge that its cameras were not natively end-to-end encrypted at that time.

In January 2025 the New York Attorney General secured a $450,000 settlement with the companies distributing eufy products over these security findings, requiring them to strengthen their security programme and encrypt video in storage and transit.

Since then eufy has moved its cameras to encrypted-by-default streaming, applied AES-128 and RSA-1024 encryption on HomeBase 3, run third-party security audits and launched a bug-bounty programme. If subscription-free local storage and strong privacy are the reason you’re looking at eufy, it’s sensible to keep firmware up to date and review your cloud and notification settings. We think the current products are a reasonable choice, but we’d rather you knew the full history and decided for yourself.

Common Problems & Fixes

Running into issues? Our eufy SoloCam S220 troubleshooting guide has step-by-step fixes for offline errors, Wi-Fi, storage, motion, night vision and more — all verified against eufy’s official support.

Real World Performance

The S220 covers the basics well for the money — solar power, a clear 2K daytime image and easy standalone setup. Night vision is infrared black-and-white rather than colour; for colour and a spotlight, the S230 is the step up.

Who Should Buy It

A great budget choice if you want a simple solar 2K outdoor camera with local storage and no subscription, and don’t need colour night vision.

Verdict

The eufy SoloCam S220 is excellent value — solar, 2K and subscription-free, ideal for straightforward outdoor monitoring.
