Overview

The eufy SoloCam S230 (also sold as SoloCam S40) builds on the S220 with colour night vision and a 600-lumen motion-activated spotlight, while keeping the same solar power and standalone local storage. It’s a strong wire-free outdoor camera that needs no hub and no subscription.

Key Features

2K resolution (2304×1296), 135° field of view
600-lumen motion-activated spotlight
Colour night vision up to 8m
Integrated solar panel — about 2 hours of sun keeps it charged
Built-in 8GB storage, no monthly fee

Setup & Compatibility

Set up in the eufy Security app on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. The integrated solar panel and built-in battery give continuous power, and footage stores on the camera with no hub required. The spotlight triggers automatically on motion.

What’s New

The spotlight and colour night vision are what separate the S230 from the S220 — it lights up and shows colour when motion is detected at night, rather than infrared black-and-white.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Colour night vision plus 600-lumen spotlight
+ Solar powered, standalone
+ No hub or subscription
+ Easy wire-free install

Cons

2K rather than higher resolution
Fixed view, no pan/tilt
Records motion-only, not 24/7

Is Eufy Safe? The Privacy History Explained

Eufy markets its cameras on privacy and local, subscription-free storage, but it’s worth knowing the background. In November 2022 a security researcher found that some eufy cameras uploaded thumbnail images to the cloud even when cloud features were switched off, and that camera streams could in some cases be viewed without authentication by anyone with the right link. In January 2023, eufy’s parent company Anker acknowledged to The Verge that its cameras were not natively end-to-end encrypted at that time.

In January 2025 the New York Attorney General secured a $450,000 settlement with the companies distributing eufy products over these security findings, requiring them to strengthen their security programme and encrypt video in storage and transit.

Since then eufy has moved its cameras to encrypted-by-default streaming, applied AES-128 and RSA-1024 encryption on HomeBase 3, run third-party security audits and launched a bug-bounty programme. If subscription-free local storage and strong privacy are the reason you’re looking at eufy, it’s sensible to keep firmware up to date and review your cloud and notification settings. We think the current products are a reasonable choice, but we’d rather you knew the full history and decided for yourself.
