Is your Ring Spotlight Cam (2nd Gen) producing footage that looks blurry, pixelated or far below the expected Retinal 2K quality? Here are the checks you can safely carry out before contacting support.

What This Problem Means

The camera’s Retinal 2K video is not displaying at expected quality, most commonly caused by insufficient Wi-Fi bandwidth at the camera’s location or a lens obstruction.

Common Symptoms

  • Footage appears grainy, pixelated or heavily compressed
  • Faces and details are unclear even at close range
  • Video quality noticeably varies at different times of day
  • Live View quality is poor even when the camera shows a good signal in Device Health

Safe Checks You Can Try

1. Check Wi-Fi Signal Strength

Open Device Health in the Ring app and check the signal strength. Ring recommends a minimum upload speed of 2Mbps for good video quality. A weak signal at the camera’s location will reduce video resolution automatically.

2. Clean the Camera Lens

Inspect the lens for dust, dirt, moisture or spider webs. Use a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth to gently clean the lens surface. Outdoor cameras frequently pick up grime that degrades video quality without being immediately obvious.

3. Check for Condensation

In cold or humid conditions, condensation can form inside or on the lens. Allow the camera to warm to ambient temperature. If condensation is persistent, check the camera’s weatherproof seal is intact.

4. Test Video Quality in Live View

Open Live View in the Ring app and compare quality with a recent recorded clip. If Live View is clear but recordings are not, this points to a compression or bandwidth issue during recording rather than a hardware fault.

5. Check Internet Speed

Test your home broadband upload speed using a speed test app on the same Wi-Fi network. If upload speeds are consistently below 2Mbps, the camera will automatically reduce video resolution.
