Are the 550-lumen spotlights on your Ring Spotlight Cam (2nd Gen) failing to activate when motion is detected? Here are the checks you can safely carry out before contacting support.
What This Problem Means
The motion-activated spotlights are not turning on automatically when expected, which is usually caused by an app setting or insufficient battery level.
Common Symptoms
- Spotlights never come on after dark despite motion being detected
- Camera records motion events but no spotlights activate alongside them
- Spotlights can be turned on manually in the Ring app but do not trigger automatically
- Spotlights stopped working after a firmware update or app change
Safe Checks You Can Try
1. Check Motion-Activated Lights Is Enabled
Open the Ring app, go to Device Settings, then Light Settings. Check that the Motion-Activated Lights toggle is turned on. This setting controls whether the spotlights respond to motion automatically.
2. Check the Light Schedule
In Light Settings, check whether a Light Schedule is active that may be preventing the spotlights from turning on at certain times. Disable or adjust the schedule as needed.
3. Check Battery Level
Low battery levels restrict spotlight operation to conserve power. Open Device Health and check the battery percentage. If it is below 20%, charge the battery pack before testing the spotlights again.
4. Check Light Sensitivity
In Device Settings > Light Settings, check the Light Sensitivity setting. If it is set very low, the motion sensor may not be reaching the threshold needed to trigger the lights even when the camera detects motion for recording purposes.
5. Restart the Camera
Remove the Quick Release Ultra Battery Pack for 10 seconds, reinsert it and wait two minutes for the camera to fully restart. Test spotlight triggering after the reboot.
