Nest Cam Outdoor (Wired, 2nd Gen) Won’t Connect to Wi-Fi
Is your Nest Cam Outdoor (Wired, 2nd Gen) failing to connect to Wi-Fi during setup or after a network change? Here are the checks you can carry out before contacting support.
What This Problem Means
The camera cannot establish or maintain a stable Wi-Fi connection β particularly common for outdoor cameras where the mounting location may be at significant distance from the router.
Common Symptoms
- Setup stalls or fails at the Wi-Fi connection stage in the Google Home app
- Camera connects briefly then drops offline repeatedly
- Google Home app shows a weak connection or connection warning for the camera
- Camera cannot be found on the network after a router change or broadband provider switch
Safe Checks You Can Try
1. Check the Wi-Fi Signal at the Mounting Location
Google’s guidance is clear that outdoor cameras often lose connection because they are too far from the router, or because walls and other structures block the signal. Run a speed test near the camera’s mounting point using your phone. If the signal is weak, a Wi-Fi extender or outdoor access point will resolve this.
2. Move the Camera Closer During Initial Setup
During the initial setup process, place the camera within 3 metres of your router. Complete the setup there, then move the camera to its final outdoor location. Setting up at full distance is a common cause of initial connection failure.
3. Check Your Router Settings
The Nest Cam Outdoor supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi. Confirm your router is broadcasting correctly and that the network password is entered correctly during setup. An incorrect password is one of the most common causes of failed connections.
4. Restart Both Router and Camera
Unplug your router for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Once the router is fully reconnected, unplug the camera’s power cable for 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Attempt the setup or reconnection once both devices have restarted.
5. Check for Network Extenders
If your home uses Wi-Fi extenders or mesh nodes, your camera may be trying to connect to a network extender that does not have a reliable connection to the main router. Per Google’s guidance, try unplugging any extenders temporarily during setup to let the camera connect directly to the main router.
When To Contact Support
If none of the checks above have resolved the issue, contact Google Nest support at support.google.com/googlenest. Your device serial number is available in Device Info in the Google Home app.
