If your Ring Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen) is showing this problem, working through the checks below in order will resolve it in the large majority of cases. Each step is safe to carry out yourself and is verified against Ring’s official support guidance.
What This Problem Means
Battery-powered Ring devices are designed to last weeks between charges, but high motion activity, poor Wi-Fi signal and cold weather can significantly reduce battery life.
Common Symptoms
- Battery depletes within days rather than weeks
- Frequent low battery notifications in the Ring app
- Device goes offline due to low charge
- Battery not lasting as long as previously
Safe Checks You Can Try
1. Reduce motion sensitivity and zones
Open the Ring app and go to Device Settings → Motion Settings. Tighten motion zones to exclude roads and high-traffic areas beyond your property. Reduce sensitivity and set Motion Frequency to Periodically or Regularly. Each motion event uses battery power.
2. Check Wi-Fi signal strength (RSSI)
Open Device Health and check RSSI. Below −60 dBm means the device is working harder to maintain its connection, draining the battery faster. Improve signal with a Ring Chime Pro or Wi-Fi extender.
3. Disable Snapshot Capture
If Snapshot Capture is enabled in Device Settings, the device takes regular still images throughout the day. Disable it or reduce the frequency to save battery.
4. Check operating temperature
Ring batteries drain significantly faster in cold weather below 3°C. Reduced performance in winter is expected, not a fault.
5. Charge the battery fully
Charge via USB-C until the indicator glows solid green (up to 10 hours from empty). If drain continues to be rapid after a full charge, the battery cell may have degraded.
