If your Ring Battery Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen) is showing this problem, working through the checks below in order will resolve it in the large majority of cases. Each step is safe to carry out yourself and is verified against Ring’s official support guidance.
What This Problem Means
Ring devices use infrared LEDs for night vision. When night vision is not working, the image appears dark, blurry or washed out at night. This is almost always a settings or environmental issue rather than a hardware fault.
Common Symptoms
- Image appears completely dark at night
- Night vision image is blurry or has a pink/purple tint
- Night vision image is overexposed (white wash)
- Night vision activates and deactivates repeatedly
- Colour night vision not activating when expected
Safe Checks You Can Try
1. Check night vision settings in the Ring app
Open the Ring app, go to Device Settings and look for Night Vision or Color Night Vision settings. Ensure night vision is set to Auto or On. If Colour Night Vision is available on your model, confirm it is enabled.
2. Check for infrared interference
A nearby bright light source — porch light, street light or spotlight — pointing directly into the camera lens can overexpose the night vision image or trigger the IR cut filter incorrectly. Try repositioning the camera or shielding the lens from the direct light source.
3. Clean the lens
Dust, condensation, cobwebs or fingerprints on the lens cause blurry, washed-out or dark night vision. Clean the lens with a soft, dry cloth and test again.
4. Check battery level
A low battery can reduce IR LED performance. Charge the battery fully and test night vision again.
5. Restart the device
Remove and reinsert the battery to restart the device. A firmware glitch can occasionally prevent the IR cut filter from switching correctly between day and night mode.
