Ring Floodlight Cam (2nd Gen) Not Detecting Motion

🔄 Try this first — Switch off the power to the camera at the fuse box for 10 seconds, then switch it back on. Also restart your router by unplugging for 30 seconds.

Is your Ring Floodlight Cam (2nd Gen) failing to detect motion events or trigger alerts when movement occurs? Here are the checks you can safely carry out before contacting support.

What This Problem Means

The camera is powered and connected but not recording motion or sending notifications — usually caused by motion zone settings, sensitivity configuration or a paused Ring Protect plan.

Common Symptoms

  • People and vehicles pass in view with no alerts or recordings triggered
  • Ring event history shows no or very few recent motion events
  • Live View works but no motion clips are being saved
  • Motion alerts stopped suddenly after a settings or app change

Safe Checks You Can Try

1. Check Motion Sensitivity

Open the Ring app, go to Motion Settings and increase the sensitivity level. If set too low, the camera requires a larger or faster movement to trigger — increasing sensitivity extends the detection range and responsiveness.

2. Check Installation Height

Ring recommends installing the Floodlight Cam at approximately 9 feet (2.7 metres) for optimal motion detection. If mounted significantly higher or lower, the passive infrared sensor may not detect human-sized motion reliably.

3. Review Motion Zones

In Motion Settings, check that your motion zones cover the correct area. If zones are drawn too small or positioned incorrectly, movement outside them will not be detected. Redraw zones to cover the full area you want monitored.

4. Check Smart Alerts Settings

If Ring Protect is active and Smart Alerts are enabled, the camera may be filtering certain types of motion. Go to Device Settings > Motion Settings > Smart Alerts and ensure the relevant categories (People, Vehicles, Other Motion) are all enabled.

5. Check Ring Protect Subscription

Confirm your Ring Protect subscription is active in the Ring app under Account. Without an active plan, video recording for motion events may be unavailable depending on your device settings.
