Is your Ring Floodlight Cam (2nd Gen) recording footage that looks blurry, pixelated or below the expected Retinal 2K standard? Here are the checks you can safely carry out before contacting support.
What This Problem Means
The camera is not outputting expected Retinal 2K video quality — this is most commonly caused by insufficient Wi-Fi bandwidth at the mounting point or a lens obstruction such as dirt or moisture.
Common Symptoms
- Recorded footage appears grainy, pixelated or heavily compressed
- Faces and details are unclear even in close-range footage
- Video quality noticeably drops at night or in low-light conditions
- Quality varies significantly between Live View and stored recordings
Safe Checks You Can Try
1. Check Wi-Fi Signal at the Camera
Open Device Health in the Ring app and review the signal strength at the camera’s location. Ring requires a minimum upload speed of 2Mbps for Retinal 2K video. A weak or unstable signal forces the camera to reduce resolution automatically.
2. Clean the Camera Lens
Floodlight cameras are installed in exposed outdoor positions and the lens accumulates dirt, dust, pollen and insect residue over time. Use a dry microfibre cloth to gently clean the lens. Even light contamination causes noticeably degraded video quality.
3. Check for Condensation
Rapid temperature changes can cause condensation to form on the lens. Allow the camera to reach ambient temperature before testing video quality. If condensation is a recurring issue, check that the camera housing seal is intact.
4. Test Broadband Upload Speed
Run a speed test on the same Wi-Fi network as the camera. If your broadband upload speed is below 2Mbps at the time of testing, the camera will automatically limit video resolution regardless of camera capability.
5. Compare Live View with Recorded Clips
If Live View quality is acceptable but recorded clips are poor, the issue is likely with video compression during storage rather than the camera or lens. Check whether the issue occurs at specific times of day — high network usage can reduce available bandwidth.
When To Contact Support
If none of the checks above have resolved the issue, contact Ring support at ring.com/gb/en/support. Your serial number is available in Device Health in the Ring app — have it ready before you call.
